Jane Braddock

Jane Braddock has called Nashville home since 1980, but it is her farflung travels away from Tennessee that shape her work as much as anything. A former New York-based textile designer, Braddock creates canvases and collages with richly textured surfaces. The layers of pattern and color are often inspired by foreign texts and scripts from her journeys around the globe, particularly Sanskrit. The collage pictured here, from 1997, is part of a larger series of works composed of detritus from Braddock’s trips — “a scrap of paper from China, a feather from India” — which she assembled in a sketch book, always leaving the torn edge of the journal page visible.
